It is a blessing and a half that Los Angeles got its very own Babycakes bakery...plus it's half a blessing that they opened the LA location downtown, which requires some tricky traffic planning for me to make the trek. Close, but not dangerously close.
Babycakes is a vegan bakery. Most items they sell are gluten free, but some items are made with spelt. The staff are very knowledgeable and clear which items have spelt (in the above pic, the spelt items are sitting on the red-lettered shelf). Everything I brought home was delicious. So were the 2 doughnuts that I ate before I left.
I usually only trust Karina Allrich's recipes for at-home vegan baking, but I bought the Babycakes cookbook and tried a red velvet cupcake recipe. the results were beyond disastrous. I made little red Mars rocks that tasted like sand.
I'll revisit my Babycakes cookbook eventually, but until then, I'm planning a field trip to the bakery. Isss'wunderful.

Mmmmm...cake! I tried L.A.'s new Magnolia Bakery (of SATC fame) last night and their cupcakes were def gluten-filled. And oookay. I still prefer Yummy Cupcakes, I think. I thought of you--did you know that there are bunches of peanut butter cookie recipes that call for no flour? You probs did. If not, let me know and I will send you one!
ahh yes. i have this book as well. have made a few of the gluten free vegan offerings. it is my opinion that you have to be a RILL RILL proficient baker to get these right.
not a dabbler like me. for instance my mom can get everything in it right. mine always turn out like strange questionable food things.
as in, hmmm..what IS this thing i am eating. says the person who is just assuming they are eating a regular cupcake. in fact i made the mini versions of the chocolate and vanilla cupcakes for fiona's birthday party last year and only one kid ate any of it. and some of the others were overheard saying "yuck!! what is this piece of shit?!!"
pretty sure fiona lost friends that day.
anyway...just waking up from an amaaaaazing sex dream with gordon ramsay. still a little high on it...
Hey Anna :)
I LOVE the LA Babycakes! I was up in LA for school, but just graduated and moved back to the San Diego area. I miss it so much! Haha, but yes the parking was always a fun adventure. I usually parked in front of the police station a little bit down the street on the left. There is free 30min..or maybe it was 15min parking? Great for a quick stop by and safe getaway :). Thanks for your post!
Jessi
Agreed! I think they are holding out on those recipes! I too found the few that I tried to turn out HOORRIBLY!!
