In light of Obama's speech to Congress last night, it's time for some accountability in my household. I said I would cut back on grocery spending, and I did. It was easy since Husband and I ate two meals a day on set for the last two weeks in January. I only bought the basics since we were working so much...at least...that's how I remember it going.
Total Grocery store spending in January: $648.51.Wait, WHAT? That's TERRIBLE! I only saved $120 from December, and December's always an overspending month due to the holidays. This doesn't make any sense at all!
Let's say that the three of us ate 186 meals in January (3 people x 3 meals x 31 days in January). Of those 186 meals, 40 of them were provided on set, and 15 of them were at restaurants (which were not counted in the Grocery Spending figure). So why did my grocery spending remain the same, when the meals we ate at home were reduced by 30%? Shouldn't my grocery bills have gone down by 30%?
Did I not learn anything from
Ms. Mary Frances' interviews with Heather???
Actually, I did learn a lot. I shopped more at Vallarta, less at How's, purposefully at Trader Joe's, and not at all at Whole Foods. I looked for discounted meat that was processed in a safe, humane, non-chemically laden way. I bought produce on special. I saw to it that we ate all leftovers instead of pitching them weeks later.
There is something to be said for the a high cost of living here in Los Angeles, but I'm going to remain vigilant, tweak my shopping and cooking habits, and not give up on trimming the grocery spending fat. After all (cue instrumental version of "God Bless America"), I am my family's Obama. They look to me as their beacon of hope to set the tone for a new family economy. In fact, I'm not just my family's Barack, but am also their Michelle. Two Obamas, all rolled into one--the perfect mix of hope, brains, and class.
Logically it follows that Husband is Joe Biden and Nancy Pelosi all rolled into one, since he likes to mouth off and is quite fond of the color green.
